JACKET STORY

Standard

”It’s 9°C in Srinagar and surviving without 3° & 4° garment is impossible in this chilly weather.”

”Till last year , i don’t do so much of layering of clothes as my hometown’s (Saharanpur) weather is pleasing in winters but after coming to kashmir i’m seeing real winter and layering is necessity here.”

So,here are my first blog post inspire from layering of clothes i.e. JACKET.

Basically, jacket is a mid-stomach–length garment for the upper body. A jacket typically has sleeves, and fastens in the front or slightly on the side. A jacket is generally lighter, tighter-fitting, and less insulating than a coat, which is outerwear. Some jackets are fashionable, while others serve as protective clothing.

Let’s take a look of different JACKETS that make you warm and trendy this winter…

PUFFER JACKET

Puffer jackets have a signature quilted design with sections that are “puffy” between the stitching. They are filled with down insulation or synthetic fibers, both of which can provide a high level of warmth depending on how well they are made and the quality of the synthetic fibers. Another attribute is that they are often very lightweight despite being very warm . Compared to wool or leather, puffer jackets provide the unique combination of both warmth and lightness.

Eddie Bauer invented the first puffer jacket in 1936. Called the Skyliner, it encased down feathers within quilted fabric and was created out of personal necessity after Bauer nearly lost his life to hypothermia whilst on a fishing trip in mid-winter.

The modern puffer was born when Eddie Bauer almost froze to death. It was after the experience, a fishing trip on which the legendary sportsman’s wool jacket saturated with water and hardened to ice, that he set about creating a lightweight but survival grade jacket. His chief innovation was quilting the fabric so the down filling didn’t fall to the bottom. Bauer patented his design in 1939.

The parka style was originally created by INUIT PEOPLE as a functional way to protect themselves from freezing polar conditions.

Traditionally it was worn by women included with a baby pouch,as well as fur-lined hood and longer fitting body.

In western culture the parka gained prominence through the US military wear of the 1950’s.

It was typically in sage green with the eponymous fur lined hood which was simple and practical.

From a practical point of view parka was warm, robust and a longer design making it ideal for wearing over sharp suits whilst riding a scooter.

Later on due to a mix of a originality cheapness and broad availability from army, surplus stores its position in Mod uniform

As further variations such as the fishtail parka developed during the Korean war again out of climatic necessity.

JERKIN JACKET

Jerkin is a man’s short close-fitting jacket, made usually of light-coloured leather, and often without sleeves, worn over the doublet in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The term is also applied to a similar sleeveless garment worn by the British Army in the 20th century.

During the First World War, the British army issued brown leather jerkins to the troops as a measure to protect against the cold but to allow freedom of movement. These garments generally had four buttons and were lined with khaki wool. They were practical, hardwearing and extremely appreciated by officers and other ranks alike. By the time of the Second World War, the leather jerkins were still on issue to all the Commonwealth forces and were universally popular. Jerkins made in Canada were dark brown with black wool linings and differed in general appearance from the British jerkins.

LETTER JACKET

Letter jackets are also known as “varsity jackets” and “baseball jackets” .

letter jacket is a jacket traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United States to represent school and team pride as well as to display personal awards earned in athletics, academics or activities.

letterman, in U.S. activities/sports, is a high school or college student who has met a specified level of participation or performance on a varsity team.

Varsity jackets trace their origins to letter sweaters, first introduced by the Harvard University baseball team in 1865. The letter was usually quite large and centered (if the sweater was a pullover); stripes on one sleeve designated the number of letters won, with a star indicating a team captain.

The body (i.e., torso) is usually of boiled wool and the sleeves of leather with banded wrists and waistband. Letter jackets are usually produced in the school colors with the body of the jacket in the school’s primary color and sleeves in the secondary color. Although sometimes, the colors of the Jacket may be customized to a certain extent by the student. There could be cases where a student could change the color so much that it doesn’t differentiate too much from school colors. They usually feature a banded collar for men or a hood for women.
